Arlecchino's diamond texture is made by alternating knit, purl, and seed stitch. Start and end your socks with seed stitch, and finish off with a sewn bind-off. Why not pamper your feet and knit them in a soft cashmere blend, like I did!

This pattern is also on Ravelry.

Arlecchino is Italian for harlequin, a character in improvisational comedic theater. He is typically dressed in costumes with colorful diamond-shaped patches. More information can be found in Wikipedia's Harlequin and Commedia dell'arte pages.

Finished Size
Fits foot 7.75 - 8.25" / 19.7-21 cm around the widest part, the ball of the foot.

Yarn
3 balls Peruvian Collection Baby Cashmere (60% Baby Alpaca, 30% Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere; 0.88 oz / 25 g; 109 yd / 100 m) in #1960 Rose Heather. A solid or semi-solid yarn is recommended.

Needles
US1 / 2.25 mm dpns.

Required Skills
Working knowledge of toe-up socks; this pattern can easily be converted to top-down. Must know Magic Cast-On (or preferred toe-up sock cast-on method), how to knit with dpns, read charts.

Finished Size: Depends on the amount of yarn and needles used. You can make a larger shawl for warmth or a smaller shawl, a shawlette, to drape around the neck. For a shawlette, use lightweight yarn and small needles.

Yarn: At least 350 yards / 320 m of yarn. A lightweight yarn creates an ethereal shawl, a heavier weight yarn creates a cozy shawl. The yarn I used was a gift from a friend, hand-dyed in subtle blues and purples. I believe the base yarn was Henry's Attic mohair.

Needles: Needles appropriate to your selected yarn. This is a matter of personal preference. Smaller needles yield smaller holes; bigger needles create airiness.

Notions: Waste yarn, 4 stitch markers, tapestry needle.

Gauge: N/a. With a variet of needles, knit 6-8 rows of stockinette with a row of yarnovers and decide how open you want your shawl to be.

Required skills: Knit, purl, provisional cast on.

Size: Fits head 21" / 53.3 cm and larger; 8" / 20.3 cm tall.

Yarn: Lana Grossa Multicot (60% Cotton, 40% Microfiber; 1¾ oz / 50g; 87.5 yd / 80m; ): 2 balls in #39 Purple, 1 ball in #1 White. (Purchase here.)

Needles: US5 / 3.75 mm and US7 / 4.5 mm dpns. Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle.

Gauge: 18 sts x 24 rows = 4" on larger needles. To save time and ensure accurate sizing, check gauge.

Required Skills: knitting in the round, paired decreases, chart reading, intarsia.

LINING
Using a provisional cast-on, waste yarn, and smaller needles, cast on 90 sts. Join for working in the round. Place marker to mark the beginning of the round. Knit 26 rows in stockinette stitch.

Turning Row
Switch to larger needles and purl 1 row.

OUTER
Knit 6 rows, placing a second marker between the 45th and the 46th stitch. This marks the middle/front of your work, and serves as reference point for your intarsia work. All intarsia will be knit in stockinette stitch. Begin pattern chart of 25 sts x 19 rows.

Having finished the chart, knit 1 row, removing middle marker.

Adjust any loose stitches on your intarsia work. This is the best time to do so, as after joining the lining and outer you'll only be able to fix the stitches on the outside. Turn hat inside out and use the tapestry needle to anchor all loose ends firmly into the inside of the work. Trim all ends to 2". Turn hat out. Fold lining in at the purled turning row, so that the purl sides are facing each other, and thus covering the back of your worked intarsia.

Join Lining and Outer
Next row: Undo about 4-6 stitches of the lining at a time, and knit 1 lining stitch together with 1 outer stitch.

DECREASES
Knit 9 more rows, placing a stitch marker every 15 stitches (6 total). Work decreases according to chart. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Thread tail through remaining 6 stitches, draw tight and secure. Weave in end into the inside of the hat.

FINISHING
Block.

Inspiraled is a knit hat enhanced by a spiraling four-stitch cable that circles up to the top. As well as having two yarn weight options, there are two lifted increase options. The pattern may seem easy, but pay attention to the charts!

Fits up to 22" / 56 cm head.

Sport / Ecru version
Yarn: Dale of Norway Heilo. (100% Norwegian Wool; 1-3/4 oz / 50g; 108 yd / 100 m).
Needles: US3 / 3.25 mm and US4 / 3.5 mm dpns.

Worsted / Blue version
Yarn: Lorna's Laces Lion and Lamb (50% Silk, 50% Wool; 3-1/2 oz / 100g; 205 yd / 187.5 m).
Needles: US6 / 4 mm and US7 / 4.5 mm dpns.

Skill Level
Must know how to knit on dpns, cable without a cable needle, read charts.

Inspiraled was inspired by Marnie Maclean's Nautilus hat. The spiral is one of those natural forms whose appearance, anywhere, is so appealing, and finding Marnie's pattern when I was relatively new to knitting was kismet. As anyone who's knit hats will know, the spiral also appears in decreases on a bottom-up knit hat. I wanted to incorporate something interesting around this, and after much trial and error, and two months of back-and-forth with my incredibly generous and patient tech editor (who else), Inspir(al)ed is fit for release.

I've come a long way in pattern writing. This pattern was originally written as a blog post but I've taken it down and replaced it with a pdf. The original short row instructions using a backwards yarnover has been replaced with wrap-and-turn. Size: 8.5" / 21.6 cm around the widest part (the ball) of the foot

Yarn: 2 balls Baruffa/Lane Borgosesia Aerobic (100% Extra Fine Merinos; 60g, 165m; 1.75 oz, 180 yds), in #61816. A solid or semi-solid yarn is strongly recommended. This yarn has been discontinued, so use another fingering weight yarn that will give you the gauge specified.

Needles: US1 / 2.25 mm set of dpns. Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: Waste yarn; crochet hook; 2 extra double-pointed needles, same size as working needles or smaller; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 29 sts = 4" /10 cm in stockinette stitch. To save time and ensure correct sizing, check gauge.

Require Skills: Some experience with knitting socks toe-up, short rows, cabling without a cable needle.

This is my version of the ubiquitous drop and garter stitch "pattern" that everyone's familiar with. I lay no claim to the pattern whatsoever, just to my formula, which is specific to the yarn I used.

Finished Size: At least 10" / 25.4 cm x 66" / 167.6 cm. Does not require blocking.

Yarn: 1 ball Patons Divine (79.5% Acrylic, 18% Mohair, 2.5% Polyester; 3.5 oz / 100 g; 142 yd/ 130 m) in #06740 Floral Fantasy.

Needles: US17 / 12 mm.

Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge: None taken. Keep in mind that this is bouclé and mohair, so your knitting must be loose on the needles.

Cast on 18 stitches.

*Knit 4 rows. On the 5th row, knit, looping your yarn twice for each stitch. On the 6th row, knit, dropping the extra loop, and pulling its base. (This ensures that the lengths of all the drops are even.)**

Repeat from * to ** until you are almost out of yarn, making sure you finish the 6-row pattern repeat.

Knit 4 rows. Cast off.

Blocking isn't necessary. Enjoy!

A quick weekend project, started while reading Wendy Knits! (my copy happens to have a 20-page folio that was bound upside down) and finished while watching Crash. About 4 hours from start to finish. My co-worker gave me the yarn because she'd tried crocheting with it and, predictably, gave up. A bouclé-mohair yarn is *definitely* not a beginner yarn. She wanted to make a scarf for herself. That was all I needed; I knew exactly what to do with it.

With complicated textures and variegations, it's better to work a simple stitch or pattern to allow the yarn quality to shine. This yarn was surprisingly soft to work with, and with my honkin' size 17s, the knitting went quickly. I was almost tempted to keep the scarf!

I've added the scarf pattern to my sidebar. I've also renamed it, for Liesel, who asked in the first place. I rather like her name! This is an easy lace scarf that can be knit in less than a day, and is a great stashbuster for those single skeins. It can be worked in various weights of yarn, from worsted down to laceweight. Worsted yields a very contemporary soft, chunky scarf, whereas laceweight yields a traditional delicate, airy scarf. For Liesel I used worsted. Try using 1 pattern repeat for a skinny scarf; add more pattern repeats for a wider scarf, perhaps 5 or so for a stole.

   

Size: One size fits all.

Yarn: 1 ball TLC Cara Mia (50% Acrylic, 19% Nylon, 18% Rayon, 13% Angora; 3.5 oz; approximately 210 yd) in #2205 Melon.

Needles: US8 / 5 mm. Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge.

Gauge: 35 sts (edge sts + pattern) = 6.5" / 16.5 cm. To save time and ensure accurate sizing, check gauge.

Required Skills: Decreases, increases.
